Mirrored SQL Databases in Microsoft Fabric

Microsoft Fabric introduces a seamless way to bring your existing Azure SQL Database or SQL Server data into the unified Fabric platform through Mirrored SQL Databases. This capability enables realtime analytics and integration with Fabric services without the need for complex ETL pipelines or data duplication.

What is a Mirrored SQL Database?

A mirrored database in Microsoft Fabric is not a physical copy but a live connection to your operational SQL data whether it is hosted in Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Managed Instance, or SQL Server (via Azure Arc). The data is continuously synced into a Fabric managed Delta Lake format inside a OneLake Shortcut, enabling near real-time querying using Fabric’s analytics engine.

Key Benefits

  • Run analytics on your production data with minimal latency, eliminating stale reports and batch refresh delays.
  • Skip data movement and transformation tasks. The mirror syncs schema and data automatically.
  • Once mirrored, data becomes accessible across Fabric experiences like Lakehouse, Data Warehouse, Notebooks, and Power BI.
  • Data is mirrored in open Delta Lake format, allowing high performance and compatibility with Spark and SQL engines.

Use Cases

  • Real-Time Reporting: Dashboards with the latest business metrics sourced directly from operational databases.
  • Ad-Hoc Analysis: Data engineers and analysts can explore live data with SQL or Notebooks without impacting the production system.
  • Data Science Integration: Leverage the same data for ML experiments in Fabric Notebooks using PySpark or Pandas.

Note:

  • Read-Only: Mirrored data is read-only in Fabric. For writes or transformations, consider loading the data into a Fabric Lakehouse or Warehouse.
  • Storage Costs: Though data is not physically duplicated, mirrored data incurs storage in OneLake due to Delta Lake conversion.
  • Preview Feature: As of now, Mirrored SQL Database is in preview. It is recommended to test thoroughly before production use.

Final Thoughts

Microsoft Fabric’s Mirrored SQL Database feature is a game changer for organizations wanting to connect their operational systems with modern analytics in a frictionless manner. It brings agility, reduces complexity, and lays the foundation for true real-time business intelligence all within the unified Microsoft Fabric ecosystem.
